Living Abroad in Extraordinary Times

During extraordinary or unprecedented events, many people document how these experiences affect them, their loved ones, and their communities. To preserve material describing such events through the eyes of expatriates around the world, the EAC launched the Living Abroad in Extraordinary Times initiative.

As an institution that focuses on the social history of expatriation, the EAC collects and preserves material about how expatriates and repatriates meet the challenges they face while living abroad. This mission is even more important during exceptional and unprecedented times. The initiative began during one such event, the COVID-19 pandemic, when the EAC started collecting material documenting how expatriates around the world experienced the crisis. Its scope has since broadened to include other extraordinary events.

If you are an expatriate who has lived abroad temporarily and you have documented your time there during an extraordinary event or period, we are interested in preserving your story. We are open to receiving material in any language and format, such as:

• blogs;
• personal writings on paper;
• emails;
• social media posts and exchanges;
• photography that supplements writing.

Donors are required to sign the EAC donation agreement. If you have any questions, please email us at welcome@xpatarchive.com.
