The Expatriate Archive Centre’s 10th anniversary Saudade exhibit is on the road! From August 1 – 31, 2018, visitors at Maastricht’s legendary Boekhandel Dominicanen can find Saudade amongst the store’s books and other wares.
Saudade aims to explore how history can be made visible through a contemporary context.Ten artists each drew inspiration from individual collections held in our archive and created artworks that fit together inside our iconic travelling suitcase. All mediums have been included, from painting and photography to performance and video. Above all, Saudade reveals intricacies about how history is categorised, visualised and communicated. The Boekhandel Dominicanen is a unique and appropriate setting for this exhibit.
Just as the bookstore itself is a repurposing of a centuries-old Gothic church, Saudade is an opportunity to look at archives with a fresh perspective. The Saudade project premiered in The Hague in April 2018. It is documented in the book Saudade: An Intersection of Archives and Art. The book has conversations with each artist, essays from historical and artistic perspectives and the full story of the celebrated suitcase. The book can be purchased at the Boekhandel Dominicanen or by emailing welcome@xpatarchive.com.
If you are unable to visit Maastricht, Saudade will be at the Rotterdam City Archives 1 October – 13 December, 2018.
