The Expatriate Archive Centre (EAC) is looking for an experienced, creative, dedicated Director.

Working hours: part-time, 24 - 30 hrs per week

Job context: 

The EAC is an independent, non-profit foundation based in The Hague. It collects and preserves the life stories of expatriates worldwide for research.

Our dedicated team includes a Director, Archivist, Assistant Archivist, PR Manager, and Office Manager, supported by enthusiastic volunteers and interns from diverse backgrounds. We pride ourselves on a welcoming, inclusive, collaborative environment that fosters personal and professional development. The working language at the EAC is English.

The EAC is governed by a Board of Trustees. The Director reports to the Chairman of the Board and is responsible for the day-to-day operations, strategic planning, financial oversight, and overall leadership.

The EAC also engages with the (international) academic community through initiatives such as the EAC Thesis Award, which encourages research on expatriate life.

Key responsibilities:  

  • Define and implement the strategic direction of the EAC in consultation with the Board;
  • Manage the organisation's day-to-day operations, ensuring efficiency, quality, and mission alignment;
  • Lead and develop a multicultural team of professionals, volunteers, and interns; foster a culture of collaboration, growth, and shared expertise;
  • Promote the EAC's profile within international, academic, and expatriate communities; strengthen and expand networks and partnerships;
  • Oversee the organisation and promotion of the EAC Thesis Award, strengthening connections with academic institutions and supporting research on expatriation;
  • Ensure the continued expansion and accessibility of the EAC's collection;
  • Oversee the creation and distribution of PR and communication materials, including a biannual newsletter and digital outreach;
  • Maintain and refine marketing strategies and engagement efforts;
  • Prepare annual reports, strategic updates, financial statements, and other documentation for the Board;
  • Collaborate with the Treasurer to prepare the annual budget and financial forecasts;
  • Identify and secure funding opportunities (grants, sponsorships, partnerships);
  • Ensure the EAC's compliance with legal, fiscal, and regulatory requirements, particularly in the context of Dutch foundation law;
  • Stay informed on issues related to expatriation, migration studies, and archival best practices.

Qualifications and skill requirements for an ideal candidate: 

  • Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience in a comparable role;
  • Academic degree in a field relevant to the EAC's mission (e.g., history, archival studies, cultural studies, international relations);
  • Strong understanding of archival principles or proven ability to master them quickly;
  • Fluent in English; good command of Dutch. Other languages are a plus;
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and inspire teams, including volunteers;
  • Excellent interpersonal, networking, and stakeholder engagement skills;
  • Strategic thinking, resourcefulness, and effective project management;
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills;
  • Proven experience in working with a Board of Trustees, including reporting, governance, and collaboration;
  • Sound knowledge of the legal and operational requirements for managing a non-profit foundation in the Netherlands or a similar jurisdiction;
  • Comfortable working independently, managing multiple priorities, and embracing initiative;
  • Demonstrated intercultural sensitivity and understanding of global mobility;
  • Proficient in digital tools, software, and systems relevant to modern non-profits.
